Origin: USA (southwestern Colorado, southern Utah, southern Nevada, California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas), northern Mexico, at 2500 to 10000 feet elevation (750 to 3000 m), depending on the latitude.

Growth Habits: Evergreen, clump forming shrub or occasionally small tree, 3 to 8 feet tall (90-240 cm), or up to 15 feet as a small tree (4.5 m); light gray bark; leathery leaves, 0.6 to 1.6 inches long (1.3-4 cm), 0.3 to 0.9 inch wide (0.7-2.4 cm)

Watering Needs: Little to moderate water, prefers an alkaline soil

Fruiting Habits:
Slender, annual acorns 0.5 to 1 inch long (1.3-2.5 cm), with turbinate warty cups, covering 1/4 to 1/3 of the nut.
